In today’s fast-evolving digital landscape, the value of data cannot be overstated, especially for small businesses aiming to grow. At the Growing with Sparkle Webinar 3.0, hosted by Sparkle, entrepreneurs and data experts shared insights into how businesses can leverage data to enhance decision-making, optimize operations, and ultimately scale. Here’s a recap of the highlights from the session.
The webinar kicked off with a key statement: “A hunter with only one arrow does not shoot carelessly.” This proverb perfectly captured the essence of data-driven decision-making. The underlying message was clear— businesses, just like hunters, have limited resources and must be strategic in how they allocate them. By harnessing data, business owners can make informed choices that help them target the right customers, optimize resources, and achieve better outcomes.
The first speaker, Dr. Bayo Adekanmbi, a data expert and CEO of Data Science Nigeria, used relatable examples to demonstrate how even the simplest businesses can apply data to make smarter decisions. Drawing an analogy with Mama Put (local food vendors), he highlighted three critical types of data analysis that businesses can adopt:
One of the standout discussions was around how businesses can differentiate themselves using data. In a marketplace where starting a business is easy, standing out is the real challenge. Bayo demonstrated how analyzing customer feedback, understanding purchasing patterns, and keeping track of competitors' actions can help small businesses offer something unique.
For instance, the example of a man selling ordinary goods who managed to capture attention through creative packaging and marketing emphasized how simple innovations, driven by data, can make a business more appealing. His success story, where he grew from a small-time seller to making over 200,000 Naira through e-commerce, showed how data-driven strategies can revolutionize even the most basic business models.
Bayo also touched on the growing role of Generative AI in business, describing it as a tool that can identify patterns and make predictions in ways that humans might overlook. Whether generating marketing copy based on successful historical campaigns or analyzing customer behavior to suggest business strategies, Generative AI is a game-changer for businesses looking to scale efficiently.
Ebun, the second speaker and CEO of Montego Hair, shared her experiences of using data to manage her inventory and make pricing decisions. Given the current FX instability, she explained how she adjusts her prices daily based on the fluctuating rates. She emphasized the importance of keeping track of sales data to identify which products are performing well and how this helps allocate resources effectively.
Ebun also touched on how Sparkle’s Business Platform has been integral in helping her manage her customer database and invoicing system. She praised Sparkle for offering tools that automate processes, allowing her to focus on growing her business while keeping track of customer behavior and sales performance.
The webinar wrapped up with actionable takeaways for small business owners:
